Malesyan Review of Mr Peabody’s Apples
MR PEABODY’S APPLES
By Madonna
Publisher: Puffin Books
Price: RM59.95
The success of Madonna‘s first book, The English Roses, is followed by Mr Peabody’s Apples, the second of five children’s books written by the pop queen. The Material Girl of the 1980s has finally set her roots down and got back in touch with the simpler, humble values of society that have been forgotten.
Mr Peabody’s Apples sees a strong celebration of an age-old moral message encased in a very touching fable. It is the retelling of a story that Madonna‘s Kabbalah teacher once told her, where vicious rumours spread by a young boy cause irrevocable damage in a village community. It looks particularly at the power of words and how we must be sure to choose them carefully to avoid hurting others.
Accompanied by warm, rich illustrations by Loren Long, Mr Peabody’s Apples will strike a resonant chord in the heart of children everywhere, “even grown up ones”. At almost RM60, it may be a tad expensive, but once you’ve been taken by the first two charming books, you might want to look out for Madonna’s forthcoming third book, Yakov and the Seven Thieves.
