Music Married Fashion at MTV Video Music Awards
The racy wedding dress Madonna wore to the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, now in its 20th year, marked the marriage of music and fashion moments.
Madonna, Prince, Cyndi Lauper and their lacy, layered looks ruled in the mid-1980s but were later upstaged by “hair bands” ‘ such as Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses and Poison. Also in the ’80s, the London look — a Gothic, postmodern punk movement — took its place on MTV’s stage.
Then in the early ’90s, anti-fashion grunge bands Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers became style icons in their jeans and flannel shirts, while rappers Tupac Shakur, Biggie Small and Dr. Dre favored baggy gangsta gear.
In the late ’90s and early 2000s, the Spice Girls offered something for everyone — as long as they had great legs — as women’s clothes got skimpier and skimpier. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dogg and Eminem reflected a generation who wears gym clothes on the street. There has been one constant over the years, though: Michael Jackson’s too-short pants and jackets.
