Nelly Furtado on meeting Madonna
When Nelly Furtado emerged more than three years back, she was idealistic and cautious, as you’d expect of someone fresh out of her teen years — that stretch of chaos when you think you’ve got it all figured out and life’s just a matter of being free as a bird. And so the song went.
Furtado gave birth to a baby girl three months ago — she turns 25 this week — and she’s got three years behind her as a professional, Grammy-winning recording artist. Her life experience shows on her new, sophomore release, Folklore, and it shows too in her new confidence and easygoing interview manner.
“It’s like I tapped into a whole new emotional sensitivity, I guess, and vulnerability, which has helped me a lot,” she said in a phone interview from Los Angeles, where she’d just performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Madonna was also a guest on the show, and backstage, she requested a meeting with Furtado. The veteran rock star mom asked about Furtado’s new baby, and signed a copy of her children’s book for Furtado’s little girl. Furtado was taken aback that the larger-than-life Madonna was no bigger than herself. Doing the show was another matter.
“I actually got kind of nervous ’cause Madonna was watching me perform, like, from three feet away,” says Furtado. “There’s nothing that can faze me now“.
