Sire Records’ Boss sells his art collection
On December 11, 2003, Sotheby‘s will offer for sale property from the collection of Seymour Stein, the co-founder of Sire Records, who was responsible for launching the careers of such notable musicians as Madonna, The Pretenders, Depeche Mode, the Ramones, kd lang and Talking Heads, among others. Comprising important Victorian
paintings and drawings, and furniture and decorations from the 1920s and 30s, the collection is estimated to bring in excess of $5 million.
Speaking of Mr. Stein, Madonna noted: “He started collecting Art Deco back in the early 1960s, long before it was in vogue and moved onto the Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite paintings a few years later. In art, as well as music, Seymour has always been ahead of the trends.” Co-founder of the legendary record label Atlantic, Ahmet Ertegun, said, “Ever since I have known Seymour Stein…he
has been an avid collector of art, objects d’art, and antique furnishings. His love and knowledge of music is matched by his aesthetic sense in the selection of the articles in this collection.”
