Stephen Bray back Into The Groove
With everyone going mad for the Madonna/Missy Gap ad, an old Madonna collaborator comes back into light.
Stephen Bray, who co-wrote with Madonna some of her major hits, such as Causing a Commotion, True Blue, Express Yourself and the biographical Keep it together, is also the co-author with Madonna of the 1984 Desperately Seekin Susan film theme, “Into the groove”, the song used in the Gap commercial.
The backing music used in the ad, is the actual demo/film version of the song, and not the Warner bros recording which was later added on some international versions of the Like a Virgin album.
We are very curious to know why they used that particular version. Is it to keep Warner out of the Gap deal? And is it Madonna who took her original 1984 demo of the song from her vaults and gave it to Gap or she had to call Steve Bray after many non collaboration years and a pre-madonna album to get it? Probably we’ll never know, but we’re happy for Stephen, whose musical talent is back in the spotlight and maybe he’ll get a cent or two of royalties, proving that working with Madonna is always a blessing.
