A Re-Invention tour review by Mike
“Hey tribers!
I’m new to this site and absolutely love it.
I went with my boyfriend to the june 17th show at Madison Square Garden.
Being an avid fan since the early 80’s I was as usualy exstatic to be there before it even started especially knowing that she would be revisiting some of her older material.
I saw the one negative post on here and found it somewhat interesting, most people on this board it seems have nothing but praise for this show, and I can see why. Having seen all of her tours (Girlie Show and Drowned World live, and the others many times on vhs/dvd) I was honestly blown away that she could put together a performance that, to me was her best show so far. It combined the drama of Blond Ambition, with the energy of Who’s that girl, and the tightness of Girlie Show, with even a little hint of The Virgin Tour thrown in!”

“The way she incorporated the newer material this time was great also, perfect song choices from American Life (although i would have definitelty prefered a full version of Intervention over Mother and Father.) I definitely enjoyed the songs much more than any of the performances frmo the drowned world tour…where to me it seemed like her heart was not really in it. This time around it was like she was truly re-energized and of course re-invented.
Not to state the obvious hilights but Burning Up has ALWAYS been one of my all time favorite songs – definitely my favorite from that first record, so that alone was enough to satisfy me, I’m hoping in the future she will bring back some more forgotten favorites like True Blue, Dress You Up, Where’s the Party, Angel etc etc…
Other than the amazing set list the performances for the most part were spectacular Hanky Panky was such an unexpected treat – amazing costume and choregraphy and the Lament pretty much brought me to tears. not to mention American Life which was over the top amazing. I was less than impressed with the performances of Material Girl and Express Yourself because although i was thrilled she was doing these great songs the performances paled in comparison to most of the rest of the show.
Now on to the negative stuff. I’m really surprised this hasn’t come up in past reviews and I know there has been discussion about Niki Haris not singing on this tour…and regardless of what went down with THAT decision, you would think that Madona of all people would settle for nothing but the best to back her up.
Both Donna and Niki are amazing performers in their own right and replacing either one of them would be a tough task. THAT said I was more or less outraged by Siedah Garrett’s performance. Her solo in Like a Prayer was nothing short of horrible. I’m not saying that to be mean or because I’m a huge Niki fan or anything like that, I’m saying it because it’s true. Aside from the terrible solo, she had no energy on stage, and being that Donna and Niki used to do a whole lot more of dancing and actual participation in the show it seems clear that this girl cannot dance, which sucks for Donna I guess.
What ALSO sucks for Donna is that having heard her two albums and having seen her perform with Madonna since 1986, I know SHE can sing…so why didn’t she get the Like a Prayer solo? I’m a professional singer and I’m currently singing backgruonds for an up and coming rick band, so I know what I’m talkin about..and I’ve sung with people in church that were WAYYYYYYYY better than this girl.
OK I will stop ranting and raving about this for now, but I am surprised that I’m the first one to bring it up.
Moving on….
the show as a whole to me was the best so far…I’m going again in philly on the 5th and I’m so glad to have the opportunity to see it twice!!! 🙂
Thanks for letting me share my experience everyone” xo
