Air Canada Centre in Toronto
Tonight Madonna will perform the first out of three shows of her re-Invention World Tour 2004 in Toronto. A Madonna World tour is then back in Canada after the Drowned World Tour had only visited Europe and the US.
Let’s take a closer look to the venue of the three shows in Ontario.
The Air Canada Centre is Toronto‘s theatre of sports and entertainment. Located in the heart of the city, it is close to the CN Tower, the theatre district, restaurants, major hotels, shopping, and two main transportation arteries: the Gardiner Expressway and Union Station that services the Toronto Transit Commission and GO Transit system. The facility has revitalized the area known as the Railway Lands East.
Air Canada Centre provides an excellent link between the downtown core and Harbourfront, one of Toronto’s major tourist attractions.
Built on the site of the Canada Post Delivery Building and still retaining the east and south walls, setting the context for this 665,000 square foot facility, the complex also includes the Air Canada Tower, a 140,000 square foot, 12-storey office tower in the northeast corner of the facility, adds to the skyline presence of this exciting arena.
A conservation program was implemented during construction of the original building façade. Stonework, bas-relief plans, and historic window profiles were restored.
The roof is 40 feet above the existing façades, and has a profile designed to be flat, giving the appearance of a hangar. This allows for better acoustics inside and a prominent city presence outside without blocking the view of other landmark buildings.
Air Canada Centre has earned its place of distinction along Toronto‘s skyline, and in the hearts of sports and entertainment fans from all over the world. It hosted its first concert on February 22, 1999 and has a seating capacity of 19,800 seats.
Air Canada Centre is located at 40 Bay Street, Suite 400, Toronto, Ontario M5J 2X2. For further information please visit our Tour-O-Meter section or click here for driving directions.
