Blond Ambition Bill
Here’s more nice memorabilia from our dear friend Dye Another Day. But let’s hear the story behind it straight from him:
“Seeing those great 1990 magazine covers made me remember the Blond Ambition Tour. This is a scan of one of the bills that Madonna tossed out during the Nassau Coliseum opening night, June 11 1990. I was thrilled to hear that Madonna would tour for the first time in three years. However my joy turned to panic when the dates were announced. Madison Square Garden was closed for renovation, making that the only tour when M didn’t play the Garden to this very day. The N.Y. dates were at the arena now known as the Continental Airlines Arena.
I think it was still the Brendan Byrne Arena at the time. New Jersey?! Moi?! Bummer. Worse, when the tour opened in April, it was widely rumored that M wasn’t well and was canceling shows. Disaster! I was very worried about the N.J. shows, so I found the next nearest date, Nassau Coliseum, about two weeks before the Jersey shows.
There was no computer, no eBay and scalping is illegal in New York. So I found a scalper in Boston who had tix for Nassau and he FedExed them to me. $400 for two 18th row seats. I figured I would leave myself room in case she canceled dates. (I think she canceled half her New York shows, THANK GOD I traveled to Nassau, because I couldn’t see the show again live. I only saw BA once). I only knew one person who had a car, so I paid for her ticket if she would drive me to Nassau!!! (This person ended up becoming a huge Madonna fan.) In the end, this was the concert reviewed by the New York Times. Anyway, to make a long story short, I gleefully grabbed two of the bills that M tossed out, once again to “Material Girl,” before continuing with “Into the Groove,” “Vogue,” “Holiday,” and closing the evening with “Keep it Together.” (You’ll notice that the bills are actually good toward two dollars of Madonna merchandise.) I think my most vivid memories of the tour are when she stands on the chair for “Open Your Heart” and seeing the sweat run down her face during “Live to Tell” For some reason, those stand out in my mind. Oh, and some asshole from the audience GOT ONSTAGE somehow during “Keep it Together.” Also that M did not address the audience at all. It was much more of a theater piece than her previous tour.
Love, Dye Another Day”
