Britan’s Most Played Song
The list of 70 songs has been compiled to mark the 70th anniversary of PPL.
The list, topped by Procol Harum’s 1967 hit A Whiter Shade Of Pale, includes songs by such obvious candidates as the Beatles, Queen and Robbie Williams.
The most popular artist was Robbie Williams, with five entries.
The Beatles have three and one-time rivals the Rolling Stones just one, with Honky Tonk Women at 42.
John Lennon has a solo entry with Imagine, but Sir Paul McCartney was not so lucky.
Elvis Presley has two songs in the list, All Shook Up and It’s Now Or Never, the same number as Madonna.
The organisation said that it had devised the chart to ensure that all decades received a fair representation, although songs from more recent times are in the majority.
