Canadian Band
By now you’ve probably heard the rock cover of Madonna’s “Music” on your local radio station or have seen the video on MuchMusic and wondered who the hell the band is.
No, it’s not Orgy, the band in question are Calgary’s Out Of Your Mouth and the cover is the first single off their soon to be released debut, Draghdad.
Like so many other covers, the song immediately caught the attention of a lot of listeners. Lead singer Jason Darr is pleased with the response people have had with it considering that the song originally wasn’t even supposed to be recorded.
“It’s one of those songs that always found it’s way into our set,” says Darr. “A lot of people commented on how great it was and said, ‘You guys should record that and put that on your record.’ So we suggested it to the record company, we played it for them and they absolutely flipped out. So that?s where the song came from.”
And it’s a good thing they did record it. Who knows what would’ve happened if the band had try to launch their career with an original tune? Whatever the outcome, it probably wouldn’t top the attention that this once-unknown band from Calgary are getting now.
“It had actually ended up getting released a little earlier then we had planned,” Darr says. “When our people were doing a meeting with MuchMusic, Much just flipped out and said, ‘We’ve got to start playing this now!’ So that started the ball rolling early.”
And what does the Material Girl think about the raucous rendition of her pop hit?
“I don’t think she cares,” Darr admits. “There’s probably so many other people covering her tunes, so it’s just one more band covering a Madonna song.”
He’s right, Madge probably doesn’t care. But thanks to her, Out Of Your Mouth have started off with a bang. With the May 18 release of Draghdad still pending, the boys are looking to set the Canadian rock scene on fire.
