Evita costumist dies
Friends and family of Glasgow costumier Cathie McLay were paying tribute today to the woman whose distinguished career started with a stall at the Barras.
Cathie, who dressed Madonna for Evita and Natalie Portman for Star Wars, died of a heart attack, aged 64.
Her husband Farquhar, 69, and son David, 33, have vowed to carry on her business in the wake of her death.
Cathie’s legacy is the Glasgow vintage clothes shop Saratoga Trunk, which specialises in Victorian-style designs and attracted customers like actress Greta Scacchi and singer Johnny Cash.
She made her name after launching an antique clothes stall in Glasgow’s Barras during the 1970s. Initially she sold antiques and copied old costumes for 1920s and 30s dress dolls as a hobby.
Her costumes proved so popular that she was soon able to open her own shop and establish herself as a leading light in the film fashion industry.
Her shop also supplied clothes for Ewan McGregor‘s 2003 film Young Adam and Holywood films The Little Vampire and The House of Mirth as well as the Scots’ favourite The Steamie.
Her funeral service was taking place at Glasgow’s Linn Cemetery today.
