Evita’s shroud expected to raise 40,000 euros
A flimsy burial shroud used to wrap the body of Argentina’s political icon Eva Peron is expected to fetch more than 40,000 euros (50,000 dollars) when it goes on sale in Rome, Christie‘s auction house said.The macabre garment will be among a collection of memorabilia from her husband, late Argentine president Juan Peron, to be auctioned in the Italian capital, the proceeds of which will go to a Latin American charity.The Foundation for Peace and Friendship between Peoples, a charity which owns the memorabilia, hopes to raise more than 350,000 euros from the 60-lot sale. Other Evita memorabilia in the sale comprise a gold-framed dressing table mirror, a leather travel folding photo-frame, a hand-mirror, a music box in working order, and several unmatched and tarnished spoons. Christie’s have posted a reserve price of 8,000 euros for the lot.Eva, revered by Argentines as “Evita” whose life story was transformed into an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in the 1980s and a film featuring Madonna, shot to prominence when she married the then-minister for war in 1944.Soruce: AFP
