George beats Madonna on Uk Radio airplay chart
George Michael was today revealed as the artist who has been played more times on British radio than any other star.
The former Wham! singer has clocked up millions of plays of his songs on radio, beating Elton John, Kylie Minogue and Madonna.
All but three of the top ten are British artists. Elton John, who sang with Michael on Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me, is in second place. Robbie Williams, 30, is the youngest star on the list but hits such as Angels have given him third place. Kylie Minogue, in fourth place, is one of only two women on the list.
The top ten is taken from all 600 UK radio stations, ranging from Radio 1,Virgin, Kiss and Capital to local enterprises.
Stations have to pay a royalty around £30 each song for a national station, every time they play a record on air.
According to Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) which collated the data, Michael has earned more than anyone else. Although the amount has not been disclosed, his music is likely to have earned millions from radio plays for himself and his record label.
