Harry Potter author JK Rowling has beaten Madonna in a list of Britain’s richest people in films and TV.

The world-famous Edinburgh writer is listed number one on the Sunday Times Rich List‘s top ten richest people in film and television.

Rowling’s fortune is estimated at £435m, while the joint wealth of Madonna and her film director husband Guy Ritchie is put at £215m.

The author, who lives in Merchiston, has made her fortune through the phenomenally popular Harry Potter books.

A film deal to have the first three books about the boy wizard adapted for the big screen has also proved highly lucrative.

Others listed on the entertainment rich list include Pop Idol supremo Simon Fuller, who is worth £220m, and Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, whose combined fortune is estimated at £160m.
