Happy Birthday Peter
Superstar DJ celebrated his birthday yesterday at Roxy.
In an interview by Gregory T Angelo in the DJ Spotlight section of HX Magazine, Peter revealed a small teaser about Madonna.
HX: What are you up to in the studio?
PR: I’m remixing Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” for Warner Brothers. I’m also working on another Madonna track – but I can’t talk about that right now!

DJ Spotlight – Peter Rauhofer
by Gregory T Angelo
We last caught up with Roxy’s fiercely fearless resident DJ Peter Rauhofer at this time last year as he was preparing for his annual birthday throwdown at the Chelsea mega-club he’s called home for the past five years. Then, Peter was pushing his Live@Roxy2 club-inspired disc and the Hear chillout compilations, overseeing his record label and wondering if Madonna was really going to swing by Roxy like she promised.
It’s 365 days later, and things haven’t changed much for the veteran spinner: Rau’ once again has two new widely contrasting CDs to promote (Live@Roxy3 and the Armani Exchange disc Higher), he’s still churning out the choons on his Star 69 Record label, and (if you have the balls to ask her) she still can’t remember her age. We sat down with the house music maestro to discuss the past 12 months.
First of all: Happy birthday, Peter!
Thank you!
What was your favorite night at Roxy from the past year?
Definitely the Beyoncé performance – it was the same week that her Grammy nominations were announced, so it was very special.
Speaking of the Grammy Awards, are you disappointed your remix of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” didn’t win this year?
Everybody knows that Maurice Joshua only got the Grammy [for his remix of “Crazy in Love”] because of all the hype around Beyoncé at the time of the awards. “Beautiful” was a huge international pop hit, but it came out at the beginning of the year. When people voted, there was no hype around Christina.
And there is another thing that most people don’t know: Maurice Joshua is on the Grammy committee that decides who gets nominated for Best Remix – and he has been nominated every year! Junior [Vasquez] deserved to be nominated for a Grammy for his remix [of “Crazy in Love”] more than Maurice Joshua.
None of the DJs I know played the Maurice Joshua mix. A lot of people came up to me and said, “Who is this guy” We never heard of him.” It’s about the Remix of the Year; it’s not some lifetime achievement award or what this guy did back in 1992 when he remixed CeCe Peniston, you know? If that’s the way it is, then I’m going to become a member and nominate myself every year, too! I didn’t take it seriously, though, because I already have a Grammy.
Let’s talk about what you did win this year – congrats on your DanceStar Award for Best Record Label!
I see Star 69 Records as more of an underground label; we are not like some of the more mainstream labels that were nominated, so it came as a surprise. It was a good surprise, though – Star 69 was exactly five years old when we won. It shows that we are doing something right.
I am loving Higher, your Armani Exchange compilation!
It?s unlike anything I’ve done before, and it was something I really enjoyed because I could show another side of myself. It has a club feel, but you can really listen to it any time of day and that’s the great thing about it.
What about Live@Roxy3? Will it be different from the first two volumes?
It’s very tribal and more back to my roots. The “screaming diva” thing is just so passé, you know? These days people are going for more underground stuff.
What are you up to in the studio?
I’m remixing Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy?” for Warner Brothers. I’m also working on another Madonna track – but I can’t talk about that right now!
And finally, I have to ask: What’s up with the new look these days – the whole beard and earring thing?
Well, as far as the beard goes, I was in a lazy mood and didn’t shave for a couple of weeks. People said they liked it, so I kept it. It looks more manly, maybe – that’s what people like, you know? [Laughs.] Women can use makeup to create hundreds of different looks. But with guys, there isn’t much you can do, you know? You can grow a beard or get a new haircut – I grew a beard!
Live@Roxy3 drops May 18 on Star 69 Records; Higher is available now at Armani Exchange. Peter Rauhofer celebrates his birthday April 24 at Roxy.
