is back from the final London show of the re-Invention tour. Here is his review:
“Hey All,
well, that’s six down and none to go. The last week-and-a-bit has just been one incredible ride and one I will cherish forever, but alas my love affair with the Re-Invention Tour has to come to an end (well, at least until the documentary and Lisbon DVD!).
First a quick rundown of tonight’s final London show. I was in the front row of Block A4 next to these two delightful Belgian girls, and the whole crowd around me was just completely up for it and full of real fans. This was opposed to the front of Block A3, where there were lots of what the Belgians christened “boring people” (including one relatively-young looking guy with a quite hideous ponytail who she had to point at to get him out of his seat for Like A Prayer), though to be fair most of them stayed on their feet for the whole show. For me it was the amazing enthusiasm of the rest of the arena that made the show one long party – as Madonna herself said, “I’ve saved the best audience for last“.
Tonight was full of lots of great little moments. During Nothing Fails she looked right at me and sang for a while, and the whole way through that song she just looked so chuffed with the crowd of people in front of her. The atmosphere just grew and grew through this whole section of the show, and when she sang the first line of Imagine the roar of approval from the whole arena was so loud that it caused her to mess up the second line!
Suffice to say she gave a wonderful speech to us after Papa Don’t Preach (having had a little problem with her bootlaces at the start of that song!) and thanked everyone for the welcome she had received. Indeed, she got a little overcome with emotion and had to take a moment to compose herself (“I can’t sing when I cry“). This sort of interaction with the audience meant that Crazy For You was set up to be something special, and even though the raising of the platform meant I couldn’t actually see her for a lot of this song the reaction from the crowds in Blocks 12, 14 and 16 was really quite memorable – well done you guys!
Well, what can I say. I just loved the whole show, and it was really nice to see her smiling and enjoying it after Wednesday’s frustrations. I also really loved being in amongst loads of great fans, and I think in future I will remember to stick to A2 or A4 for these sorts of concerts as A3 is clearly where they put the ‘industry’ types. Once again I had film cameras being pointed at me and those around me (including one VERY close-up shot that more than surprised me a little – serious personal space issues almost arose at that moment!) and I think the A4 crowd (and from what I could see the A2 crowd too) will be prime material for the documentary.
Anyway, that was tonight.”
