Like a Virgin defined the times
Thumbs up (theguide) to say Madonna‘s Like a Virgin changed the world is a bit of a stretch, but it certainly defined the times, and this is one of the stronger episodes in a series that hasn’t fulfilled its potential.
When Madonna released this song in 1984, America was in the grip of a conservative revolution. Reagan was untouchable and yuppies ruled the world. Madonna‘s unfocused but compelling message of female empowerment and sexual confidence touched a nerve and there are some surprisingly intelligent comments here about her political and social significance.
There’s no input from the material girl herself, and we could have done without “Weird Al’ Yankovic‘s insights but, for the most part, this is enjoyable and informative viewing.
