Madonna kicks off ‘spiritual’ show
Madonna kicked off her “Reinvention” tour last week, swapping her trademark sexuality for spirituality and opting for a clear political message instead of crass materialism, according to reports.
The music chameleon received mixed reviews for her opening performance Monday night in Los Angeles. According to the LA Times, the stage was alight with images of a Palestinian boy walking arm in arm with an Israeli, and pictures of ill or injured children as she sang John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
“Madonna traded most of the old sexual teasing for social commentary, and she’s no John Lennon, friends,” the Times commented.
Madonna also expressed some of her Jewish leanings by donning a “Kabbalists Do It Better” T-shirt for part of the show.
The star’s highly publicized connection to Kabbala and Judaism was part of the reason the singer cancelled the Israel dates of her tour. According to reports last week in Britain’s The Sun, Madonna cancelled her performances due to death threats against her and her children from an unamed Palestinian terror group.
