Madonna traveling with 18 trailers
Madonna plays the first of four South Florida dates on her Re-Invention Tour Wednesday night at Office Depot Center in Sunrise, so we thought we’d provide a few details.
She arrived by private jet last week and was rushed to her hotel in Miami. She flew to Atlanta for Saturday and Sunday shows, then returned to Miami Beach and a rented home on secluded and protected Star Island for her South Florida week. After next Monday’s show at AmericanAirlines Arena, she’s off until Aug. 14, when she opens in the U.K.
Though more shows will be added, the current schedule calls for 54 shows in the United States and Europe, attracting 850,000 fans. Six shows at Madison Square Garden sold out in one day, as did four at London’s Wembley Arena.
The company of 110 includes 12 dances, one skateboarder, two backup singers, five musicians and one bagpiper (which reconfirms my belief that bagpipes are not musical instruments but instruments of torture). They will use 18 dressing rooms and one backstage children’s playroom.
The show arrives in 18 trailers, one carrying Madonna’s wardrobe and makeup. The company’s wardrobe from designers Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Christian Lacroix and Jean-Paul Gaultier requires 30 trunks.
The stage includes a rotating turntable that weighs 40 tons. Sound, lights, video equipment and speakers weigh 55 tons.
Before the show, Madonna spends 58 minutes on hair and makeup and eight minutes warming up on a Pilates stretch ball. She takes a large cup of Throat Coat Honey Lemon Tea and three Ricola cough drops.
Several bottles of vodka will be at the ready, European media report, but not for drinking.Madonna uses the spirits to remove stains from her costumes. Her backstage beverage of choice is Kabbalah water. The company downs 25 cases each night.
