MTV On Madonna & Clark: Justify My Love
Madonna – who last month endorsed retired Gen. Wesley Clark as her pick for president – is now marshalling her fans to be in his army.
In a letter posted on her Web site Wednesday, the singer/actress urged fans to donate to and volunteer for Clark’s campaign.
“I’ve looked at all the Democratic candidates,” she wrote on Madonna.com. “I respect them all for their dedication and patriotism. But I’m supporting Wes Clark because in him I see the qualifications, character and vision we so desperately need. I’ve never done this before. I’ve never aligned myself with a presidential candidate during the primary season. But this time the stakes are too high, we have too much to lose, and there is so much work to be done.”
Arguing that America’s biggest threat is not terrorism nor forces in the Middle East, Madonna wrote that “our greatest risk is a lack of leadership, a lack of honesty, and a complete lack of consciousness.” She criticized the current administration for not seeing the big picture and not enacting polices that “reflect what is great about America.”
“They think too small,” she wrote. “They suffer from the ‘what’s in it for me?’ syndrome. The simple truth is that the current administration has squandered incredible opportunities to bring the world together, to promote peace in regions that have only known war, to encourage health in places that are ravaged with disease, to make us more secure by living up to our principles at home and abroad.”
The answer to this, she wrote, is to get someone in office “who is committed to ensuring that our country lives up to its promise and its people,” which she believes to be Clark, since the former NATO Supreme Commander is a “perfect example of the American dream” (see “Madonna Endorses Democrat Wesley Clark For President”).
Madonna and Clark met two months ago via “Bowling for Columbine” filmmaker Michael Moore and had dinner at the singer’s Los Angeles home. During a “getting to know you” chat, they discussed, among other things, her interest in Kabbalah, a mystical strain of Judaism. She then jumped aboard, joining Barbra Streisand, “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin and other celebrities in supporting the general’s bid for presidency. She’s slated to host a fund-raiser at her Los Angeles residence later this year.
“We’re happy to have such a big-name superstar supporting our four-star,” Clark spokesperson Bill Buck said Thursday (January 8). “We look forward to her continued support for our campaign.”
