Photographer Scavullo Dies in New York
World renowned photographer Francesco Scavullo, known for his portraits and fashion photography, died of heart failure on Tuesday in his New York apartment, according to a friend of the family.
Scavullo, who published six books of photographs and whose pictures graced the covers of magazines such as Rolling Stone, Life, Time, Town & Country, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Glamour and Cosmopolitan, was 82, family friend Scott Macomber said.
Some biographies found on the Internet listed his birth year as 1929.
Scavullo, who was born and raised in New York, had a pacemaker implanted about two years ago which was replaced last year, said Macomber, who added that the photographer had shown no recent signs of ill health and was about to leave home for an assignment when he collapsed about 9:15 a.m. local time.
His books include “Scavullo on Beauty,” “Photographs, 50 years,” and “Scavullo Nudes.”
Among his commissioned portraits are studies of Gloria Vanderbilt, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Scavullo’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
