Rachel’s Toronto experience
“My Madonna concert review. Toronto. 2nd show. Monday, July 19.
Madonna is about 45 years old and she’s a mother of two. That didn’t stop her from singing, dancing and rocking the 17,000 crowd at her 2nd of 3 Toronto shows.
Many fans came from far to see her only Canadian tour stop, including NYC, Vancouver and Quebec. Notable fans include a trio who dressed up in cowboy outfits and learned the DTM dance to entertain the concert goers b4 the show. Also there was a girl in a wedding dress (LAV) and another with the Holiday 1990 polka-dot outfit on. Very kewl.
The show started with some passage from propably the kabbalah bible or something. Made no sense to me. Whatever.
Then show started kinda slow with good songs (Vogue) and the ones I would rather forget (Frozen, AL**).
The new rock-n-roll version of “Burnin’ Up” could be released today to be a hit. I need to get that on CD somehow.
Madonna re-invented most of her classics in such a way that even True Blue fans could not recognize the songs’ introduction.
Highlights included LAP – which was followed by or preceded the “I’m not religious but I feel so moved” song – and MG.
Mo did a slowed-down-to-a-ballad version of “D&D“. Surprisingly, the lyrics become meaningful in this setting.
She also made a point of stressing “Dont ever tell me to staaaaaap” in DTM‘s ending. She sang it like she meant it.
Fan favourates EY, Music and Holiday were appreciated.
I personally wished she had done “I like to singy singy singy like a bird on a wingy wingy wingy” and am glad she did “Mother and Father“.
Madonna did John Lennon’s classic “Imagine“. I guess she is getting older and more peaceful than feisty. One thing I noticed is that Mo isn’t the best vocalist and she is not good at putting emotions in her voice, when she didn’t write the song. She coulda also added some riffs but that is not her forte, I guess. The song came off kinda corny like her remake of “American Pie” did.
She dedicated C4Y to the fans who have been with her for 20 years (you’re welcome, Mo!) I never liked that song but it does bring back memories of my youth.
In her quest to “reinvent” her old songs, she added bagpipes to 80’s track ITG or some other song from that era. Can’t remember.
Overall, a great show. A fun time. Worth the exorbant ticket price. It$ the only concert I will $ee thi$ $ummer (or $pring, or fall) but I know I made the right choice. I went all the way to Detroit to see her Drowned World Tour and that was also spectacular. I cannot say which show was better because they were so different.
A funny thing occurred: Madona just finished telling ppl she didn’t get a good night’s sleep and wondered how she would get thru the show, but she did thanks to the crowd’s pumped energy, before she went into the final set of songs. Then she tripped on the steps of the catwalk thing and fell on her face! As you would expect from Mo, she picked her self up, said “oopsies” or something, then kept it going. Go Mo!
AL = American Life ** she shoulda just done the rap part only.
D&D = Deeper and Deeper
LAP = Like a Prayer
MG = Material Girl
DTM = Don’t Tell Me
ITG = Into the Groove
EY = Express Yourself
C4Y = Crazy for You
Thanks to Rachel for sharing her tour memories with the Tribe.
