Spotlight on Siedah Garrett
Here’s a biography profile of Siedah Garrett, the new backing vocalist of the re-Invention tour.
Born in Los Angeles in 1963, Siedah Garrett is not a Madonna newbie she was also one of the backging vocalists of the 1986 album True Blue.
Siedah is also a well known name in the music industry for her talent of producing albums and writing hit songs for some of pop’s biggest names.
As a protégée of Quincy Jones, Siedah was signed to Jones’ Qwest record label and either duetted with or sang lead on recordings by renowned names such as Tom Browne, Dennis Edwards, Sergio Mendes, the Pointer Sisters, the Commodores, and Michael Jackson.
Jones also recognized Garrett’s songwriting talents, which resulted in the singer turning tunesmith for Aretha Franklin, Paula Abdul, and Natalie Cole, but it was Garrett’s songwriting for Michael Jackson that would bring her the most acclaim, as she co-wrote the massive worldwide hit “Man In The Mirror“.
Siedah attempted to launch a solo career during the late 80s, with the release of 1988’s Kiss Of Life, and then returned to her “hired gun’ status for other artists before accepting an invitation to join the Brand New Heavies for 1997″s Shelter. Despite favourable reviews, the album did not perform well and Garrett left the band in 1998.
Siedah continued to write songs for others, including Irish folk pop act The Corrs, and by the early twenty-first century she’s been focusing on relaunching her solo career signing to the Omtown Music label and releasing the album “Siedah” in 2003.
Together with Donna De Lory Siedah Garrett is now providing the backing vocals to Madonna’s re-Invention tour.
