Torontonians Scoop Up Madonna Tickets In Record Time
Canadian fans of Madonna are trying to make up for lost time. After Madonna recently announced a world tour which includes her first visit to Toronto in 11 years, fans showed just how excited they are about seeing Madge in the flesh when tickets for her July 18 Air Canada Centre show went on sale this past weekend.
Tickets for the Toronto date of Madonna’s Reinvention tour sold out so quickly that two more show were added immediately. The new shows, scheduled for July 19 and 21, also sold out. All together tickets for the three dates (the only ones in Canada) became unavailable in an astoundingly short one hour and 20 minute period. Fans obviously didn’t care about the steep prices, which ranged from $49.50 all the way to $300.
The three sold-out shows also made history for the ACC. The Madonna event is the first time that one artist has played three back-to-back sold-out shows at the arena since it opened in 1999. Others like The Tragically Hip, U2 and Shania Twain have come close with two sold-out gigs.
In typical Madonna fashion, the Reinvention shows are sure to be elaborate and theatrical. Although the tour is in support of her recent album, American Life, Madonna will be satisfying longtime fans by performing songs from her extensive 20-year career.
It’s also clear that Madonna devotees are not upset by, or maybe have gotten over, the fact that she skipped over Canada altogether the last time she went out on the road for the Drowned World Tour in 2001. The last time Madonna was in Canada was in 1993 for the Girlie Show tour.
The Reinvention tour, which also includes dates in London and Paris, will keep the pop icon in North America for much of this spring and summer. The first show is in Los Angeles on May 24
