“It was it. The 9th of June of 2001, the day I’d been waiting for years. My first Madonna concert and I wake up with 39ºC of fever.
I had to go immediately to the hospital and they said I was with a cold and should remain indoors for a couple of days. It was one hour before I had to catch my plane to Madrid and then catch another to Barcelona so my times was running out.
My cousin didn’t want to go with me in that condition but I somehow managed to convince her and of we went. I spent the whole time feeling miserable and it only got worse when I got to Barcelona.
I managed to crawl to the Palau Saint Jordi at approximately 7pm and I started to see all the fans and somewhat my spirit kinda lifted. When I got in the pavilion nobody could tell I was sick… I was actually quite the opposite. I got my tourbook, a poster and a t-shirt and went to my seat.
Man… I could barely believe it. Within all the excitement time passed by just like that and a little after 9:30 the lights went out and everyone was screaming. Then the show began with the band and Niki and Donna coming on stage and with that amazing remix… and then, in a cloud of smoke, Madonna appears.
I think that’s one of the closest experiences I can think of as seeing God in front of my eyes. When she started singing “Drowned World” everyone followed her and it was a complete religious experience “I’m not religious, but I feel so moved… makes me wanna pray”. You know how the rest of the show goes but let me tell you I?ve never heard Madonna’s voice so crystal clear and controlled as she was that night.
The Detroit recording surely doesn?t do her any justice as she was absolutely breathtaking. The whole concert was a high point but there were some songs that really roared: the frantic movements of “Impressive Instant“, the energy and joy of “Ray of Light“, the sheer amazement of “Frozen“, the unison singing of “Gone“… all absolute standouts.
But if I had to elect only two moments they would have to be “La Isla Bonita” with everyone doing the flamenco clapping and shouting “Olé” with Madonna looking the happiest I’ve ever seen her and of course… the grand finale… the outburst of pure energy and love for sound that is “Music”.
After we saw Ali G saying goodbye we didn’t want to leave… everyone had the time of their lives, singing along during the WHOLE concert (and they were thousands and thousands and thousands of people there). And even though it was over that was one of the best nights of my life.
Now I just can’t wait for the re-Invention Tour and repeating this in Wembley Arena and hopefully in Barcelona as well. “This is my religion…” You bet it is.”
