Tribe Preview: Stella Gets Madonna
Our friend Loviku has just sent in the scan of an article about Madonna‘s Tour costumes featured in the July/August 2004 isuuse of the gay-minded belgian magazine “Gus“.
The article also features an exclusive sketch of the Madonna costume designed by Stella McCartney.
“Whitney and Beyoncé have called on Dolce & Gabbana. Céline wears Ungaro and John Galliano. Kylie has been dressed by Julien MacDonald. A diva ain’t a diva unless she’s got a designer on board come time to tour. But Madonna, diva queen supreme, demands more: for her current Re-Invention tour, she has enlisted
no less than 13 designers. Even for the Material Girl, that’s a record: but the lady never has been accused of being low maintenance. A new Madonna metamorphoses five times a night onstage courtesy of same of the top names in fashion.
Veterans of former Madonna tours Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dolce & Gabbana join newcomers Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel,
Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney (see exclusive drawings) and a few select others in redefining Madonna through style.
“Madonna has always had a special relation with fashion,’ says Arianne Phillips, stylist and costume designer for the Tour. “So well welcomed the opportunity to work with several designers.”
Just another style strategy in a career that’s spanned two decades?
Not at all, says Phillips. While the press reads her every move as plotted for maximum publicity, Madonna’s image is an organic evolution.
She leaves no stone unturned on her quest for self-discovery. Some aspects of her life are not for public consumption – but others do end
up being expressed in her visuals. Every few years , the press heralds a new Madonna like she’s a live-action version of an endless babushka, the Russian figurine that, when opened, reveals another figurine which, in turn, contains another figurine…
Sartorialy, Stella McCartney‘s costumes reflect the emotionol heart of the show. Subtler but no less powerful than the other costumes, the
Stella McCartney silhouette “is Madonna at her best”. Stella, who weathered undeserved difficult press in britain last year, captures the essence of Madonna without sacrificing her own artistic integrity. Stella gets Madonna – which makes Stella is so of the moment.”
