Birhan thanks Live Aid
The famine survivor who shared the stage with Madonna at Saturday’s London Live 8 concert has paid an emotional tribute to organiser Sir Bob Geldof, for making the world care about saving her African homeland.
Birhan Woldu was shown starving to death in a Live Aid video 20 years ago, but Geldof flew her over from Ethiopia for Saturday’s historic gig to show the world that thanks to their response, she is now a beautiful, healthy agriculture student.
Madonna then hugged Woldu, and insisted the thrilled African remained onstage during her performance.
Geldof explained, “See this little girl? She had 10 minutes to live 20 years ago… She is here tonight… Don’t let them tell us it does not work.”
And Woldu says, “Thank you Bob Geldof. Before this concert I had no idea there were so many people or that so many people want to change the world to make it better. “It was Live Aid that helped to save my life – and now I believe together we can save the lives of millions more. This is an experience that will give hope to the world. I want to tell people how grateful Africa is for this help with our trade and debt problems. “We’re strong people and want to stand on our feet. What you have done will make a difference.”
