Daddy, that’s Madonna. Don’t you know who that is?
TheDay.com features today a conversation with Danny Aiello who recently took a few minutes to talk with kristina Dorsey about his history with singing, his jobs before acting, and why he resented his role in “Moonstruck”.
Here’s an excerpt of the interview where he talks about his role in Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” video.
“On starring as the titular Papa in Madonna’s video for “Papa Don’t Preach,” a song about a pregnant teenager who wants to keep her baby:”
“I was asked to do that by Sean Penn. I didn’t know Madonna from Adam. But he was going with her. I said, “I don’t do videos, I’m a serious actor.” My daughter Stacy got wind of it, she was 13 at the time, and she said, “Daddy, that’s Madonna. Don’t you know who that is?” She persuaded me, as she does all the time, to do it. So I did it for her.
Then I did an answer video, called “Papa Wants the Best for You,” written by a fellow named Artie Shreck, who performs nightly in Atlantic City. … We did a video, I produced, directed and sang in it. Seymour Stein, who is Madonna’s record label president for Sire Records, heard it and liked it and said, “What am I going to do with it, it’s only one record?” So he ordered me a record label contract. But he wanted me to sing Italian songs – which I didn’t know. (He laughs.) I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood, so I’m not acquainted with Italian songs. So that didn’t happen.”
