Koko and MuchMusic in Canada
As Madonna’s highly anticipated 10th studio album hits stores, Canadian fans wanting to see the Material Girl in concert will be able to do so through a mobile event presented by MuchMusic.
Canada’s first live mobile concert, Madonna Live At The KOKO is available to mobile TV subscribers. It’ll be a particularly special show for the international pop star, an intimate concert in front of only 1,500 fans at a club in London, England.
The mobile show, beginning at 5pm ET and lasting an hour, will also feature backstage interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, coinciding with the release of Confessions on a Dance Floor.
“This is another first for MuchMusic where we provide our loyal fan base – wherever they are – with ultimate access to the world’s must-see entertainment events,” David Kines, Vice-President Music & Youth Channels, CHUM Television, said in a press release. “What better way to launch Canada’s first live mobile concert than with the hottest musician on the planet.”
With the acknowledgement that technology is helping to drive the music industry, artists like Madonna, U2, and Robbie Williams are turning to new ways to help promote their songs.
Hung Up, the first single from Confessions, has already topped both the Canadian radio charts and the Canadian digital downloads chart, which monitors legal music downloads.
The Canadian arm of Warner Music, the singer’s record label, has spared no expense in building the hype in Toronto, holding a pair of swanky release parties at downtown clubs, driving around in a promotional SUV limo previewing tracks from the album on Motorola’s new iTunes-enabled cellphones, and hosting a themed benefit in the city’s gay village.
After arguably the only flop in the singer’s 20-year career, 2003’s highly political American Life, Madonna reportedly returns to her dance pop roots with Confessions.
“I think for her, this record is sort of a retrospective of her career … it’s very self-referencing,” says Stuart Price, who wrote and produced the record. “I think the reinvention this time is not so much of a reinvention as an embracing of what it is and what she does.”
Madonna, 47, says she’s not looking for more fame, preferring to focus on her family, her spirituality, and making music that’s true to who she is.
“I’m constantly changing and growing, and hopefully my work will always reflects that,” she says. “Some things people will be able to relate to and they’ll be popular and accessible, and other things they won’t, but I’m not going to let that stop me. I didn’t get into this business because I wanted people to like me instantly and be my best friend.”
Though she may not be looking for best friends, Madonna certainly has no shortage of fans. The Material Girl has sold over 200 million albums, earned 33 number one dance hits, five chart-topping albums and 46 Top 40 singles.
