Madonna at Tower Records – 2 years Later
We keep celebrating American Life this week with a selection of M-morabilia from that album and related events.
Let’s start with the Tower Records event. Madonna did an instore appearance in
New York City on Wednesday April 23 at Tower Records Greenwich Village to sign copies of the album to fans.
Our friend Barney shared the following memorabilia from that day with the Tribe.
MadonnaTribe member Billy was also one of the guys lucky enough to be able to see and meet Madonna at Tower Records. Billy had a wonderful day and he had the chance to met nice new friends on that occation. People with whom he attended a lot of re-Invention shows last summer.
Billy kindly shared his story and photos with the Tribe:
“What a crazy time that was! The store held a midnight maddness event on April 21 at Midnight and I got there a full 25 hours in advance putting me at the number 4 spot in line.
Camping out for that long with 250 crazed Madonna fans is an event in itself. There, I was able to meet two women who, to this day are my best friends.
At midnight on Monday we were given wristbands that enabled us to come back on Wednesday for the concert and autograph signing.
We starting lining up in the early morning hours on Wednesday. When we were ushered into the small venues, the crowd went wild when our queen came out.
She sang a set which included 2 versions of American Life (the only fully acoustic version she ever
performed!), X-Static Process, Nothing Fails, Mother and Father, Hollywood, and Like a
Virgin.
Look for me on the dateline video singing Hollywood and begging Madonna to sing “Like a Virgin”, yes that is me!
During the 2nd version of American Life, I left and went to the line to meet her. When I walked up to her she said to me, ‘Oh I remember you!‘ . My heart was racing.
She signed my american life poster and it was over as quickly as it came.”

Let’s close this corner with one of the most wanted Madonna items ever. When it first came out, the replica of Madonna‘s Black Mini Cooper from the American Life video istantly became a rare and sought after item for which collectors were willing to pay big money.
An even more limited edition of the Madonna mini cooper has later surfaced, it’s the Red Mini Cooper V.I.P. Edition (shown below), a very rare produced in only 24 pieces.
Along with the impossibly rare Camouflage Edition, these were exclusively distributed to selected guests, instead of the standard black Album Launch Party edition.
