Madonna Is Still On Top Of Her Game
Madonna is the undisputed queen of pop; her constant reinvention and ability to keep up with the cutting edge of modern music have kept her at the top of her game for over two decades.
And this week the “Material Girl” has done it again – her new single “Hung Up” went straight in at Number One in the UK singles chart. Her recent success comes twenty years after her most successful year. In 1985 Madonna ruled the world. That year – with “Like a Virgin” perched at Number One – she boiled down her philosophy, her definitive worldview, to one phrase. In “Into the Groove” the songstress proclaimed, “And you can dance – for inspiration.” Twenty years later the world’s most famous Kabbalist has shown she never lost her faith in the beat.
With her new album “Confessions On A Dancefloor” Madonna has gone back to her roots – the forty-seven-year-old wants to show that she can still stay up late.

The sexy singer kicked off the recent MTV Europe music awards in style when she burst on to the stage in a giant disco ball wearing a vintage leotard and ?20,000 worth of diamond eye make-up. The self-styled pop icon opened what was a truly spectacular awards ceremony and wowed crowds with her first live rendition of disco track ‘Hung Up’.
The master of reinvention succeeded in winning over the crowd and viewers with one of her raunchiest performances to date. The mum-of-two writhed with her male dancers and belted out her latest tune – a disco number underpinned with a sample of Abba’s ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme’.
Robbie Williams saw her performance from backstage and admitted he was blown away.
He quipped: “I watched with my mouth open. I can’t believe she’s 89 and still looking as good as that. Seriously though, she is absolutely amazing.”
Reggae star Shaggy also admitted he was in awe of the pop beauty, saying afterwards: “She’s the biggest pimp in the business. She’s Madonna. She looks good and she deserves it.”
The ‘Like a Virgin’ singer will be hoping for a return to that success with new album ‘Confessions of a Dancefloor’. Her last three albums sold almost 11million copies in total but the figure was well below par for an artist who has shifted more than 160 million albums during her career.
Madonna will mark the launch of her new album with a concert at a tiny London venue she played at the very beginning of her career. She is to perform at London’s KOKO – formerly the Camden Palace – in front of 1500 contest winners on Tuesday.
Madonna originally played at the Camden Palace at the beginning of her career in June 1983. The gig was her first in the UK and followed the release of her underground club hit “Everybody“.
Stuart Price, Madonna’s musical director and co-producer of the album, said: “Just as the record is where pop meets dance, this show is where live musicians meet the DJ world.”
Madonna – who famously married actor Sean Penn and dated high profile men including Warren Beatty – married British film director Guy Richie in a lavish ceremony in 2001.
The beautiful star says she fell in love with her husband when she saw his naked chest. She says the “Lock Stock” director caught her eye when he stripped off during a tennis game to reveal his muscle-bound physique.
The blonde singer told British TV chat show host Michael Parkinson: “I saw him with his shirt off playing tennis and that was a big plus.
“And then I sat next to him at a lunch and he was incredibly witty and that was another big plus.”
She added: “Finally I saw his first movie, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, and I thought “God, he’s incredibly talented”. So those three things put together were a huge aphrodisiac.”
The star also revealed she is not the diva she once was, because she has controlled her legendary tantrums.
She confessed: “I’m a dramatic person and I probably had some spectacular tantrums. But not now, I’m more in control of my big fat ego.”
The mum-of-two then stunned the TV audience by admitting she might be “a gay man in a woman’s body”.
When asked why she had become such a huge gay icon, she confessed: “They didn’t have a problem with my Sex book. Maybe I’m a gay man trapped in a woman’s body.”
Madonna is all about controversy – she once admitted: “I have provoked all my life, not for the sake of creating scandals or to be political, but for my sake, my rights as a woman in a male-dominated society.”
Despite being continually outspoken, Madonna has confessed she regrets her wild antics over the years.
The sexy singer admits she blushes with embarrassment when she thinks back to some of her more outrageous outfits and behaviour, including the infamous conical bras she wore on her ‘Blonde Ambition’ tour – and says she no longer craves attention.
She said: “I’m not obsessed with publicity or celebrity anymore. I think it’s all a lot of sh*t. I had it and it didn’t make me a happier person. Actually, I quite hate it when the media doesn’t leave me and my family alone, but I accept it as the price of success.
“I get freaked out by some of the haircuts and outfits I had in the past but nothing too serious.
“I like to think of myself as a revolutionary.”
Revolutionary or not, Madonna’s talent, tenacity and ability to storm the charts time and time again have earned her the recognition she craved. She is the ringleader of popular music – and has shown the music business what the power and ambition of one woman can do.
