Madonna loves Bunn, traditional with a twist
For nearly 20 years Debby Bunn, 41, was a London makeup artist deftly dabbing powder on the likes of Kylie Minogue and David Bowie. A few years ago, when her pals began having kids, Bunn started to whip up little dresses on a sewing machine and lug them to photo shoots.
“When you do makeup there’s loads of hanging-around time” she explains. The dresses, made of fabrics from flea market and “car-boot sales”, were an instant hit, and her friends began to harangue her to make them professionally. The brand Bunny London was born.
And then Madonna changed everything. On a shoot for the singer’s “American Pie” video, Madge’s stylist admired the frocks and told Bunn to drop a couple at the hotel. Two months later, li’l Lourdes was photographed clad in Bunn’s clothes and sales took off. Bunn describes her style as “the kind of clothes your nana used to make for you, kind of traditional but with a twist.” Bunn is not a big fan of the new fashion for little girls, which has been described as hokker chic. “I think childhood is so short, really,” she says.
The daughters of Brooke Shields, Kate Moss and Jamie Oliver have also been spotted in Bunn’s designs, and Madonna recently gave new mum Gwyneth Paltrow a couple of outfits. Last fall Bunn’s designs arrived stateside, at Saks, with prices ranging from $114 to more than $400. Bunn is apologetic about the steep prices but explains, “We don’t have a large factory where we churn out stock cheaply”. Besides, when you see a little cherub in one of her party dresses, you’ll thank heaven for little girls.
