Midnight deadline for Live 8 ticket texting
Just a quick reminder about the texting lottery for tickets to London‘s star-studded Live 8 concert on July 2 that closes at midnight.
Performers expected at the Hyde Park show include Maria Carey, Coldplay, Elton John, Madonna, Ms Dynamite, Paul McCartney, REM, Scissor Sisters, Snoop Dogg, Sting, Robbie Williams and U2.
Four other concerts are being held on the same day across Europe and in the United States under plans announced earlier this month by charity rocker Bob Geldof to pressure world leaders into eradicating African poverty.
Geldof has called for one million people to march through Edinburgh four days later when leaders of the world’s richest nations meet at the G8 summit at Gleneagles, some 40 miles (65 km) to the northwest.
On Saturday, Chancellor Gordon Brown announced that the G8 nations had agreed to cancel more than $40 billion in debts to multinational lenders of 18 mainly African countries.
To win Live 8 tickets, entrants have to text the answer – A, B or C – to a simple question to telephone number 84599. The question is “What city is the forthcoming G8 summit being held near this July? A) Berlin B) Moscow C) Edinburgh.”
UK and Channel Islands’ residents aged 16 or over can enter as many times as they like, at a cost of 1.50 pounds plus standard texting charges for each entry. Spread betting firm Sporting Index predicted that as much as 19.5 million pounds could be raised through the texting scramble for tickets.
