M’lady Madonna
Madonna started as a trash-talkin’ chick from Deeeetroit, but in Vogue‘s upcoming August issue, the queen of re-invention shows off how she’s bloomed into a countrified English rose.
The American rock ‘n’ roll royal, who bankrolled her first trip to London in 1982 by stealing from the cash register while bartending in New York’s East Village, said she now calls England her home.
“I love England and want to be here and not in America,” said Madge, whose adopted an oh-so-British-to-the-manor-born look to fit in with her marriage to laddie boy Guy Ritchie and their county home, Ashcombe.
They, along with kiddies Lourdes, 9, and Rocco, 4, pose for a multi-page photo spread by Tim Walker at their country retreat.
“To me, Ashcombe is a reflection of me and my husband in many ways because it reflects our willingness to make a commitment,” the lady of the manor tells Vogue. “Not necessarily to each other but to the idea of having a home somewhere, instead of living like Gypsies.”
The former home of 1930’s fashion photog Cecil Beaton, which sits on 1,000 acres of rolling hills and valleys, is located near Stonehenge, the Druidical worship site, Which, of course, was a big draw for Her Madonnaship.
While in residence at Ashcombe, Madonna says she plays lots of guitar, takes long walks and rides her bike. She uses it as a refuge from working on a new album of dance music, planning a 2006 tour and writing children’s books.
