Tim Rice: Madonna, the perfect Evita
As we are putting the finishing touches to the amazing interview we did with Sir Tim Rice, lyricist of Evita, that will be online tomorrow, here’s another preview of this interesting chat in which Tim explains that he has always respected Madonna as an artist.
MadonnaTribe: What was your idea about Madonna before Evita and did the film experience make you change your perception about her?
Tim Rice: I don’t think really, no. My idea was that she’s a very talented artist. Her music was very strong and several of the songs were clearly out of the ordinary pop songs, they were songs that would last beyond her interpretation of them. I think it’s fair to say that musically, I far prefer her earlier stuff to her later stuff.
Perhaps it’s because her later stuff is more contemporary. She’s moved with the times but it seems to me in some related stuff it’s tended to be more sounds and production values rather than songs.
I think she’s a fine artist and I was very keen for her to get the part, rather than some of the other ladies who would have been interesting but I don’t think would have been right like Meryl Streep and Michelle Pfeiffer and other names that were tossed around.
I would reckon she was by far the best because she just had the look, and there are obvious parallels to be made between Eva Peron and Madonna.
