You don’t get to be a visionary when you’re an actress
yet another teaser from the Madonna interview that will be aired on ITV’s Parkinson show on Sunday appears on today’s edition of the Daily Mail.
“In fairness, she had held her tongue for more than a year, so when the opportunity arose to take public revenge for Elton John‘s attack on her, Madonna seized it with relish. When her host asked about her diva-like behaviour, saying Sir Elton once shouted at his manager because the wind was too strong, Madonna giggled, “Yeah, but…” and put her arms in the air miming one of the singer’s famous wigs flying off. It brought a huge cheer from the audience.”
“I’m not going to go there. Elton is one of my closest friends,” she then added sarcastically.
Madonna also talks of her successful five-year marriage to British film director Guy Ritchie. After saying one key ingredient was to “learn to say I’m sorry, even when you don’t mean it” she agreed with Parkinson that her husband appeared to have “a nonchalant attitude” towards her. “Yes,” she said. “A bit like my father.”
Of her father Tony, a wine-grower from whom she was once estranged, she said: “He’s kind of clueless about all the things I do, except when I tell him that I’m doing them.”
When Parkinson asked if she was her father’s favourite singer, she said: “No, I’m not, I’m sorry to say. It’s a toss up between Tony Bennett and Celine Dion. He doesn’t appreciate my subtleties, I think.”
Madonna also hinted that she was planning to give up on movies after her last one Swept Away – a collaboration with her husband – was universally panned, saying “I think singing and song writing and producing and putting shows together is much more compatible with my personality because I like being the visionary. You don’t get to be a visionary when you’re an actress.”
