Ignorance IS NOT bliss
Today, December 1st, is once again World Aids Day and here at MadonnaTribe we would like to ask our readers to take a moment to think about what is going on.
Around forty million people are living with HIV throughout the world – and that number increases in every region every day. In the UK alone, more than 60,000 people are living with HIV and more than 7,000 more are diagnosed every year. Ignorance and prejudice are fuelling the spread of a preventable disease.
World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This year, it’s up to you, me and us to stop the spread of HIV and end prejudice.
Madonna has been, throughout the years, a fierce example of an artist that has brought AIDS awareness into the eyes of people with her music and performances. First in 1989 she included a leaflet with AIDS facts in all copies of her album Like A Prayer. Then she addressed the illness and the theme of losing friends to it in her song In This Life released on the 1992 album Erotica. More recently in 2006 she performed her classic song Live To Tell on a cross in her Confessions Tour surrounded by images of African children orphaned by AIDS hoping to get people interested in the issue.
