Madonna Takes Wales By Storm!
“The Millennium Stadium has been host to some amazing events over the years but this was the event of all events as Madonna descended upon Wales on Sunday night!” – M-Tribe reader James writes sharing his experience and images from last night.
“Cardiff was electric as eager fans gathered outside the gates of the Stadium to get the first opportunity to see Madonna perform on European soil. Being one of the lucky few at the front of the queues, Madonna gave us an impromptu insight into the show as her sound checks for “Ray of Light“, “Hung Up” and “Lucky Star” echoed beyond the walls. The crowd went mental for it and the excitement really kicked in. As the doors finally opened, a stampede to the golden circle followed. It is just as Madonna said; “Those who run seem to have all the fun!”
Paul Oakenfold opened the proceedings and warmed up the crowd before Her Madgesty graced the stage with some modern dance hits. But the anticipation was evident by the Mexican waves and the “Madonna” chants and rhythmic clapping of the crowd! WE WANTED MADGE!
Then all of a sudden, the Stadium transformed into a glittering blue, and the opening bars of “Future Lovers” played! The famous mirror ball descended. Then there she was, from inside it… MADONNA!!!
It was hard to believe it was her… she looks so fantastic and I couldn’t believe I was in the presence of such an icon!
She injected in her equestrian set with a welcome to Cardiff and invited all her Welsh fans to “Come and ride with me!”
Madonna seemed very happy and relaxed, flirtaciously winking into her crowd and reaching out to them in a teasing way saying “I can almost touch you” before responding to one fans declaration of love with “I love you too!” before “Drowned World“. She expressed how rare it was to perform a show where everyone was up and dancing and said “This is the first stadium I have played and I love it!!!” – needless to say, that set everyone into ecstatic cheers and applause.
Her interaction with the crowd did take a more serious turn when she recognized the many flags in the arena and told us how she admired our sense of unity in an troubled world. She did make the tone lighter yet still relevant with “Some people talk the talk but don’t walk the walk!”
After “I Love New York“, she hoped that the crowd did not take offence, and made up for any she did cause with a rousing performance of “Ray of Light” – “Don’t stop jumping!” was her order and we certainly respected her wishes!
The usual high anticipation points were there from the American tour – the crucifix, the George Bush comment in “I Love New York“, the Dancing Queen cape, the “Disco Inferno” and gymnastic dancers!!! But Cardiff saw a return to a more risqué Madonna from the days of Blond Ambition as she placed her hand down her trousers in mock masturbation and licked her finger after! “Erotica” remained relatively tame in comparison, with a breathtaking dance routine.
A personal highlight had to be “Like a Virgin” and the finale was fantastic as she set up a competition between each section of the auditorium as to who could sing “Time Goes By So Slowly” the best. She diplomatically called a tie!
As the gold balloons fell on the crowd and the screen descended, as did our spirits, because it was the end. The end to the greatest show in Wales and the greatest show on Earth!”
