Dear ‘Dear Jessie’!
Madonna‘s most valuable commercially available CD Single was also her first one available in the UK. Like most other Madonna CD singles that are sold as UK product, the limited release of her Christmas 1989 hit ‘Dear Jessie‘ was actually pressed in Germany specifically for the UK market.
The single reached No.5 in the UK chart – a very respectable result for a fourth single from an album, especially as it was released in the most competitive time of year – and those who purchased the single had the choice of a whopping seven formats to choose from. There was one each of the standard 1989 formats – a 7″ single, a 12″ single, a cassette single and a CD Single.
Each featuring an array of other tracks which complemented the main track. The limited editions gave shoppers a bit more of a visual experience – there was a 7″ Picture Disc, a 12″ Foldout Poster Sleeve and our star of today’s piece – the gorgeous Picture CD Single featuring a still of Madonna holding the little ‘mer girl’ from the Herb Ritts directed ‘Cherish’ video.
The CD was pressed in very limited numbers, certainly far fewer were made than of both the Picture Disc or the Poster Sleeve. That, together with the fact that ‘Dear Jessie‘ was only released as a single in the UK, Germany and Australia has meant that in today’s market it can sell for anywhere up to $250.
