Everybody – Let de DJ shake you
Madonna fan Enrique Gonzalez will be taking our readers for a walk down memory lane with his reviews and anecdotes about Madonna‘s songs released as singles. The first single to be put back on the old vinyl player can only be the first one… Everybody
Everybody – Let de DJ shake you
Madonna‘s first ever single was released in 1982, a time when the disco sound of the seventies was giving way to a more fresh dance beat. Sire Records had in mind to use “Ain’t no big deal” as Madonna’s debut instead, but they finally decided the song wasn’t good enough (I couldn’t agree more!) and it even failed to ever be a single. By choosing a song written and composed by Madonna herself long before she finally got a recording contract, Sire Records showed that they relied on Madonna since the very beginning. And God, they were right… Everybody‘s lyrics and music is an invitation to the dance floor and forget about our problems.
On a funny note, the song was aired on R&B stations in the US because people thought Madonna was actually black…It wasn´t until a video was made that people could put a face to the song (the cover of the single was a colourful collage of the city of New York).
The video for the song was shot at Danceteria, a NYC club where Madonna used to be a regular. Her first look was that of a more underground girl. The video wasn’t exactly an example of what was going to come video-wise in Madonna’s career, but it shows the first steps in the way to stardom of the biggest star in the universe.
“Everybody” failed to enter the charts, but it eventually sold around 300.000 copies. Madonna brought to life this song again for her Confessions Promo Tour with a modern version that sounded great, which was finally taken off the list of the actual Confessions world tour [as first reported by MadonnaTribe.com during pre-tour weeks] It was also the last song of the Girlie Show Tour, where Madonna introduces her band and dancers to the audience. She had not performed the song since The Virgin Tour, so it was a big surprise for many fans to hear the song live again 8 years later. Also, the line “Dance and sing get up and do your thing” from the song was used in the opening of Express Yourself for the Blond Ambition Tour.
Fans cannot only find Everybody in Madonna’s first album, but also in the “You can dance” compilation released in 1987.
