Gianni Versace and Madonna
Casa Casuarina is the infamous mansion on Ocean Drive in Miami that was owned by fashion designer Gianni Versace until he was shot dead, aged 50, by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on its gleaming marble steps ten years ago in July 1997. It is now a private members’ club, and tourists take photographs of the spot where the renowned designer died.
The mansion remains a shrine to the man who trumpeted excess, luxury and glamour: elaborate frescos adorn the walls, and endless marble, mosaic, urns and swathes of opulent fabric evoke Versace, who believed in luxury and flamboyance at any cost.
Family and friends meant everything to Gianni, and he designed wonderfully overblown rooms in his home for friends, including Elton John and Madonna, as well as for family members.
Madonna’s room features a sunken bath with gold-plated fixtures;
Elton’s is draped in velvet and there’s even a carved marble toilet in another suite.
