I Nearly Want You
The first single from Madonna‘s second compilation album ‘Something To Remember‘, was meant to be the opening track, ‘I Want You‘ – her cover of the Marvin Gaye classic, reinvented with Massive Attack. The song was lifted from the Marvin Gaye tribute album ‘Inner City Blues‘.
Madonna filmed a video and set the tone for the album, DJ friendly remixes were prepared and inhouse test pressings of the release were prepared. However, Motown, the original label that launched Marvin Gaye, objected at the very last minute due to legal wranglings and the single’s release was eventually cancelled.
Maverick had no choice but to lead with planned second single ‘You’ll See‘ yet managed to convince Motown to allow them to send the intriguing ‘I Want You‘ video to the music networks for airplay in support of both albums.
However, it wasn’t the disaster Maverick might have thought it was going to be as ‘You’ll See‘ went on to be a huge success around the world and the compilation achieved respectable sales!
