Je Suis L’Art
As some of us have read in the press, Courtney Love made some recent remarks about Madonna and whether she’s a true artist or not. Although I personally adore Courtney, and her post-drug rehab ramblings about music, the world, and our Grand Dame, there was a particular sentence that bugged me. Here is the direct quote from Courtney’s blog:
“its a joke shes singing from such a calculating thought out place all the time its never from her gut or heart or intuition so maybe it sounds great an dis slick and you can hum it -discxo n dance it but ambitionand sass and shrewd does not equal great art.”
I went ahead and kept all the misspellings, and grammatical errors, to stay true to Courtney’s original intention as an artist, or whatever she hopes to accomplish by writing like a 9-year old. The basic gist is that Madonna doesn’t truly sing from her heart, and instead, sings from a calculated, “slick” place which has helped make her career such a huge success. Ok, I’ll give Courtney that…maybe Madonna does sound a bit mechanical on some of her vocal deliveries, but what exactly does Courtney expect from Madonna? Madonna doesn’t exactly have the range of most artists, but even if she did, many of the great vocalists out there (Mariah, Celine, Whitney) rarely showcase much emotion in their voice. Their deliveries are just as calculating and slick as Madonna’s, save for a few exceptions.
