Madonna among acts nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The Material Girl could be headed for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Madonna has been nominated for induction next year, along with eight other acts. Besides pop superstar Madonna, the other first-time nominees are Afrika Bambaataa, the Beastie Boys, Leonard Cohen, Donna Summer and the Ventures, according to a source familiar with the nomination proceedings.
Back on the Rock Hall ballot after failing to get enough votes for enshrinement in previous years are Chic, the Dave Clark Five and John Mellencamp.
Madonna, a Bay City, Mich., native whose full name is Madonna Louise Ciccone, is one of the most successful entertainers of our time, with 200 million albums sold worldwide. The 49-year-old singer has notched 50 Top 40 singles, including such No. 1 hits as “Like a Virgin,” “Papa Don’t Preach” and “Like a Prayer.” A popular draw in concert, she played to more than 1 million people and grossed $260 million on her 2006 Confessions Tour alone.
On the side, Madonna has starred in numerous films, ranging from “Desperately Seeking Susan” to “Evita,” and published several books, including “SEX” and a series of titles for children.
The Beastie Boys and Madonna go way back. They were the opening act on her Virgin Tour in 1985.
If they make the cut, Bambaataa and the Beastie Boys would be among the first wave of hip-hop artists in the Rock Hall. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were enshrined in March.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, based in New York City, oversees the induction process. Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first recording.
Ballots are sent to an international pool of voters, including record company executives and previous inductees.
Plans for the 2008 induction ceremony have not been announced.
