MadonnaTribe meets Emanuela Rossi, the Italian voice of Madonna
Italy has been one of the first countries in the world where foreign films were dubbed in the late 30’s and with time, film dubbing has become a true art in the country. The voice of Italian actors usually become one with the original performer, sometimes even helping delivering a better performance.
Madonna‘s cinematic adventures were also dubbed for their Italian releases and today MadonnaTribe is happy to meet one of the voices that “makes Madonna speak fluently” in the language of her ancestors. Emanuela Rossi is one of the most familiar voices on Italian tv and cinemas. She has dubbed Madonna in some of her major film hits such as Dick Tracy and A League Of Their Own. She was also the speaking voice of Madonna as Verity in Die Another Day and Bloodhounds Of Broadway.

MadonnaTribe: Hi Emanuela and welcome to MadonnaTribe. As our Italian readers know, you’ve have been the voice of Madonna in different films, especially the ones produced and distributed by major film companies. To start our chat I would like to ask if you’re familiar with Madonna’s music and what is your opinion about her as an artist and person.
Emanuela Rossi: Yes, I like her very much. I’m a big fan of Madonna, I love her music a lot. I like her persona, her ways to reinvent herself, not being the same all the time. I think it’s vital and creative for an artist to look for new ways, new looks, different ways to sing but at the same time keeping those qualities that make you unique.
Madonna is also a controversial artist that tends to amaze people in every possibile way and the same time I think she’s a very authentic person. She looks very visceral to me, also in her quests. She has become quite sophisticated over the years but she stays true to herself and still capable to push people’s buttons. I think that’s the key of her success.
MT: Emanuela, you dubbed Madonna for the first time in 1990 for “Dick Tracy”. How did you get the part?
ER: The dubbing director and the supervisor from the distribution company agreed I was the right voice for Breathless, who is a very sophisitcated character that required fascinating qualities in her voice. I was ecstatic to be the Italian voice of Madonna in such a beautiful film and because her character, Breathless Mahoney was incredible, so fascinating and inspired to those divas from the 40’s.
The voice of Emanuela “as Madonna” can be heard on the Italian audio track available on many European DVD versions of the following films: Dick Tracy, Bloodhounds of Broadway, A League Of Their Own, Die Another Day. Emanuela is also the official Italian voice of Michelle Pfeiffer, Trinity in the Matrix trilogy and the narrating voice of Desperate Housewives.
