Not Crazy for Vision Quest mate!
Ask any Madonna fan what Madonna’s first proper movie role was and they’re likely to tell you “nightclub singer in ‘Vision Quest‘”:
That might be true for the USA, where the film actually made it into cinemas, and a couple of other territories which deigned to release it. But for many other countries around the rest of the globe where the movie was released on video, the title was changed to reflect pretty much the only reason why people wanted to see it. Many of them, such as the UK (below) even slapped a picture of Madonna on the cover just to ram it home that she was involved:
As you can see, the video release in the UK not only re-titled the film ‘Crazy For You‘, but they highlighted the release with a sticker further prompting Madonna fans to purchase. The soundtrack (which got a wider release than the actual film!) for non-Americans however, remained titled ‘Vision Quest‘.
Everywhere, that is, except Australia where, with typical Aussie brashness, they went the whole hog and retitled the soundtrack after the lead song and even switched the sleeves around so that this muscle-rippling shot of Matthew Modine got given pride of place on the cover meaning female protagonist Linda Fiorentino got kicked off the cover altogether! Tellingly, Madonna moved up the pecking order in the tracklisting on the cover of the Australian release with her ‘Crazy For You‘ and ‘Gambler‘ titles leap-frogging over ‘Journey‘ who had been given the pole position on the front cover of the international release:
