Pre-American Life?
Madonna‘s closing speech, as Loren the American art dealer, in the play ‘Up For Grabs‘ runs, partially, as follows :
“Everywhere I go, heads will turn. I’m going to be rich. Mega rich. So rich I’ll be able to buy twenty, no fifty apartments like yours!
But who’d want them?
I’ll have mansions. All over the world.
I’ll shuttle between them in my own private jet. I’ll have butlers and assistants and my own private hairdresser.
You wait, Gerry, you wait and see.
I will have a lifestyle the whole f*cking world will envy…
But do I really want to sell my soul? Again… And again and again? But just who the f*ck was I? Someone I didn’t like.”
Swifly following her stint on the West End stage, Madonna was writing her next album. Lead single ‘American Life‘ included the following lines…
“I got a lawyer and a manager an agent and a chef,
Three nannies, an assistant and a driver and a jet,
A trainer and a butler and a bodyguard or five,
A gardener and a stylist, do you think I’m satisfied?
…
I’m just living out the American dream and I just realized that nothing is what it seems…”
