Rain’s chair up for auction
The aluminum-and-rivet “Lockheed Lounge” chaise longue created by superstar designer Marc Newson in 1986 and once used on the videoclip for Madonna’s “Rain” directed by Mark Romanek is part of a design collection valued at 8 million pounds ($16.2 million) that Christie‘s International will offer in London during October’s Frieze Art Fair.
The sinous metallic “Lockheed Lounge” chair, one of an edition of 10, has a top estimate of 1.2 million pounds and broke auction records when it fetched $968,000 at Sotheby’s in June, 2006 and previously brought $105,000 at Christie’s in 2000, according to Business Week.
The Newson-designed object featured in Madonna‘s 1993 “Rain” video, according to powerhousemuseum.com.
The collection is being sold by a European couple who bought some furniture in the early 1990s for as little as $20,000, said Amy Cappellazzo, Christie’s co-head of contemporary art, in a telephone interview on Saturday. “We’re expecting broad interest in the collection,” Cappellazzo said. “You’ll see U.S. decorators bidding with Europeans, old timers with pop art collections, and California people.”
