RJ Durrell to join Britney on stage at the VMAs
On Thursday MTV made official the news about Britney Spears getting ready for a top-secret performance of “Gimme More” – the first single from her upcoming album – at this year’s Video Music Awards ceremony.
Britney teamed up with a familiar face for her comeback performance, the very talented RJ Durell, coreographer on Madonna’s Confessions Tour.
RJ’s mother, Lynda Durell, confirmed to the Grand Rapid Press that her 29-year-old son is spending hours with Briteny practicing their routine, which will last about four or five minutes, and said that “it’s a great deal of work, but he’s used to that, and he works well under intense working situations.”
About three months ago, Durell said, RJ and co-choreographer Nick Flores put together a video for Spears using some dancer friends. They knew an opportunity would surface for her to make a comeback.
“They knew it would come at the right time, and it did, and MTV was very interested,” Durell said.
Details of Spears’ routine – her first major appearance in three years – are being kept under wraps, Durell said, but she knows RJ will dance onstage next to her. Originally, he was just going to choreograph and direct the routine with Flores, and another dancer was going to share the stage with Spears. But after many rehearsals, Spears wanted to dance with Durell.
“She just said, ‘I’m just so confident dancing with you, will you do it?’ And he said yes,” Lynda Durell said. “And he is a fabulous partner.”
