The first song she ever wrote!
Madonna appeared on the Parkinson chat show on November 8th, 2005 as her first UK promotional appearance to support her “Confessions On A Dance Floor” album. The show was entirely devoted to Madonna, a rarity for “Parky“, but as far as I can remember – the first time he has ever devoted an entire to show to one woman.
Parky had been trying to secure a Madonna interview for years, but her repeated appearances on her friend Jonathan Ross‘s shows had stopped that happening. Luckily for the fans he finally secured an exclusive hour with the Queen of Pop to discuss her upcoming album but also all sorts of interesting stories from her past.
On the show Madonna performed two of the tracks from the album – the current single ‘Hung Up‘ and also the world premiere live performance of ‘Get Together‘, although strangely the latter was edited in the subsequent broadcast (together with at least 40 minutes of discussion) the following Saturday. The fans clapped and sang along to every word, depsite the album not even being released for another 6 days.
However, the most interesting performance of the night came mid-way through the host and singer’s discussion. Upon delving into Madonna‘s past Parky asked her if she recalled the first song she ever wrote. Madonna’s bashful reply surprised even the most hardcore fans in the audience – a song called ‘Tell The Truth‘. Parky then asked her, amidst gasps from the audience to sing a little of it and to the glee of the stunned crowd she gave us a little brief glimpse into Madonna the novice songwriter.
The lyrics weren’t exactly Shakespeare, and the melody was unlikely to set the charts alight, but it’s where it all began. Intriguingly Madonna said she hoped Parky didn’t have a recording of it and that it sounded better with the musical accompaniment… indicating that perhaps a recording of this slice of musical genius actually exists! If anyone happens to have it – my email address is in my Tribe Forum profile….
Anyway… all together now:
Tell the truth,
Tell the truth,
Tell the truth to me…
Dorky Madonna? Never
